Big Bang Mini for Nintendo DS Game Review

Photobucket

I posted a sneak peak of Big Bang Mini for Nintendo DS before. I am excited that I got a chance to review it as well. It is really fun! Pretty much you get to make your own fireworks displays. You send up rockets with a sweep of the stylus and try to avoid any bullets that fall from the fireworks that miss. When an enemy is defeated you collect stars and try to progress through all 90 levels.

Big Bang Mini Screenshot

It is rated E for everyone and I bet it would be fun for kids as well as adults. I may have to get my dad a DS so that he can play it on the metro on the way to work in the mornings.

The aim was to create an absorbing, yet challenging game for Nintendo DS which fully utilized the unique attributes of the stylus to enhance gameplay, according to Melanie Mroz, CEO of SouthPeak Games. “The classic arcade shoot em up, is a perennial favorite, but it needed a genuinely new twist,” explained Mroz. “There’s a universal attraction to fireworks, and something strangely captivating about creating displays, even in the midst of gameplay. The sweep of the stylus is the ideal way to launch a rocket into the sky with a satisfying swoosh, before it bursts into a kaleidoscope of brilliant shapes and colors – and destroys the opposition. It’s this combination of the old and the new in Big Bang Mini which will have players hooked.”

The game has already received an excellent response from industry reviewers, was awarded ‘Best Game Soundtrack’ at the prestigious video game festival, Prix du Festival du Jeu Vidéo in France, and was also nominated for ‘Best Portable Console Game’.

Raising Freethinkers Book Review

A Practical Guide for Parenting Beyond Belief

I found this book to be really interesting. I had accepted the opportunity to review it before I realized that it was geared towards the nonreligious. Even though it is for parents who are raising their children nonreligiously, I found that a lot of the ideas in the book to be really interesting and really make me think (and I love that about it).

One of my favorite ideas is that it is okay to question EVERYTHING. I totally agree with this. I don't think there is a bad question. There might be awkward times to have a question asked but there are no bad questions (at least to me).

Raising Freethinkers is the practical companion to Parenting Beyond Belief:
On Raising Ethical, Caring Kids Without Religion, a ground breaking collection of
essays offering secular parents advice about raising caring and freethinking
children, edited by Dale McGowan. Now McGowan, a writer and parenting
educator, and his co-authors (a humanist activist, the Executive Director of
Camp Quest, and a Religious Director of a Unitarian Society) offer practical
advice about secular parenting for the nonreligious.

Raising Freethinkers offers solutions to the unique challenges secular parents face and provides specific answers to common questions, as well as over 100 activities for both parents and their children. This book covers every important topic nonreligious parents need to know to help their children with their own moral and intellectual development, including advice on religious-extended-family issues, death and life, secular celebrations, wondering and questioning, and more.

Thanks to the Family Review Network for the chance to review this book.

I am actually going to be passing this along to a friend of mine who is nonreligious and have asked her to post a review of it as well. So stay tuned for another review this month of the book.

Eye Buy Direct Review and Giveaway

THE REVIEW:

Glasses have gotten really expensive haven't they? I mean I did not even realize it because I used to have vision insurance, but now that I don't- HOLY MOLY they are expensive!

I was pretty excited to find out about EyeBuyDirect.com. It is an online site that sells prescription eyeglasses at a VERY affordable price. I mean starting at $7.95 affordable.

Why EyeBuyDirect.com ?

* Same high quality glasses as in store
* EyeTry any of our huge frame selection

I just got them and I am so excited! They are awesome! I can not believe how affordable these are. They look just like the last pair of glasses that I got (and the last pair were SOOOOOOOOOO expensive).

It is super easy too. Get your prescription from your doc. Then you go on the site and pick a frame (which is by far the hardest part since there are so many choices). Decide if you want any upgrades (like super thin, anti-scratch, etc). Wait to have your glasses delivered to your house. Seriously, that is all!

THE REVIEW:
I have posted about a few different items that I am using to try and organize my life. Well here is another one and it is just fantastic! It is called Scanalog and it a CD-ROM software system you

I was very excited to received this software. But of course, I try to install it and was not able to (seriously this is my life- everyone else can install it with no problem, and I can't, it figures). I emailed customer support and got an email back immediately and they were able to solve my problem (I had to download an extra file, not sure why, I think I was doing something wrong). But regardless, I was able to get it working ASAP and the customer service was AMAZING.

And then I was able to use the software. HOLY MOLY! This is the greatest thing ever. I am able to scan all of my magazines, articles, recipes, and put it in my computer in a neat organized fashion! No more paper clutter! EVER! There are eleven "Master Categories" to save items in Scanalog. They cover a range of women's interest, from Home Decoration to Gardening to My Spirit.

See Kai Run Review and Giveaway!

THE REVIEW:

Sara Rose hates shoes. Hates them. I put them on, she pulls them off. During the summer, that is fine. During the winter, not so much. So I knew that I had found something great when we received our pair of shoes from See Kai Run and Sara Rose kept the shoes on. And I knew that they amazing when she brought them to me to put them on her. That is right, the girl who does not like shoes wanted me to put them on her!

In addition to obviously being really comfortable, they are just adorable. Here they are:

And here they are on her feet (it was hard to get a good pic since she was in motion)
Photobucket

See Kai Run is the brain child of a mom (of course). It was inspired by the need for comfortable shoes with flexible soles for her little Kai to wear outdoors. She wanted to create a line of shoes that was as happening as Kai - bold, hip, fun, with an urban sensibility. Something entirely different than what was offered.

The soles are made of extremely flexible rubber which is great for outdoor use while allowing the foot to flex in all the right places. They're also made of butter soft leather with a breathable leather lining and padded collars for comfort. Finally, See Kai Run shoes are easy to get on and off with Velcro closures that ensure a great fit. (Did I mention that they are also adorable?)

Their spring line just came out and they are cuuuuuuuuuute! I think we may need to get Sara Rose another pair or two.

Want to know when they go on sale, make sure to sign up for their newsletter on their home page.

One reader of this blog will win a pair of shoes from either See Kai Run or Smaller line. Your choice of style and size.

General Mills Cereal- Cinnamon Toast Crunch Review

We LOVE cereal in the Derrick household. One of my very favorite cereals is Cinnamon Toast Crunch. So imagine how excited I was to get home tonight and find a box of it on my doorstep! Yes! I was going to wait until tomorrow morning to have a bowl, but it was just calling my name. I had to have some. So I just finished my delicious bowl of cereal and figured that I would let you all know how good it was.

Did you know that cereal is one of the most nutritious breakfast options a kid can eat? Most cereals have about 100 – 130 calories per serving and provide at least 10 key nutrients. And, ready-to-eat cereal is the number one source of whole grain in American diets. Sara Rose LOVES cereal for breakfast, it is one of the items that she will eat on a pretty regular basis.

You know what I just found out? The American Academy of Pediatrics recently doubled the vitamin D recommendation for children. That means that approximately 75% of kids today don’t get the recommended levels of calcium and vitamin D -- two key nutrients for bone growth. All General Mills Big G kid cereals (including Kix, Lucky Charms, Trix, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, and more) offer a good source of BOTH calcium and vitamin D in each serving.

Additionally, a recent report in a leading consumer magazine ranked kid cereals by nutritional content, and all nine General Mills Big G kid cereals included in the report were ranked in the top half. All Big G kid cereals have at least eight grams of whole grain per serving (at least 48 grams are recommended daily), and all have 12 grams or less of sugar per serving.

The Dot Girl's First Period Kit Review and Giveaway

THE REVIEW:

Do you remember the first time you got your period? I do. I knew what it was and it still freaked me out. And I hated using those huge pads that were my moms.

Recently in my web travels, I came across Dot Girl First Period Products. Dot Girl First Period Products was founded by Kathy Pinkus and her sister Terri Goodwin. They created the kit after many conversations reminiscing about how unprepared they were when they first started menstruating. Even though they had a loving and supportive mother, it was still a topic that was difficult to talk about.

One of my favorite items that is available for purchase is The Dot Girl's First Period Kits. This is something that I wish was around when I was younger and am so glad that it is around now.

The kit includes The Dot Girl's First Period Guide, which contains answers to common questions girls might have about their period; The Dot Girl's First Period Calendar, to help girl's track their period over a year; Scensibles Disposable bags; a Kotex product brochure; a coupon for free Kotex product; hand wipes, a reusable Dot Girl heating pad for cramps and samples of Kotex products.

Terri and Kathy also write articles under the "Dot Girl Moms" name for the Kotex website.

THE GIVEAWAY:

Kathy and Terri have been kind enough to give one The Dot Girl's First Period Kit to one lucky winner of this blog.

To enter:
Head on over to Dot Girl First Period Products and leave me a comment letting me know what your favorite item on the site is. Do not just say "Enter Me", I will delete these comments. Manifest Your Magnificence Review

I love anything that can be used to help nurture a child's self-esteem. I recently received Manifest Your Magnificence Cards and that is exactly what they do.

Manifest Your Magnificence is a unique set of 63 affirmation cards designed specifically to nurture a child's self-esteem. Beautifully illustrated and written, each affirmation card carries a powerful message that when read over and over again, connects each child to their true being. When we help children reconnect with their true being, the manifest their magnificence in the world- this is the ultimate goal.

They are based on the idea that "I am" are two of the most powerful words in the world, for whatever we put after them becomes our reality. The cards can be used in many ways to remind children that they are magnificent creations. Once a child pics a card, you can reinforce the power of the affirmation by having the child express how it relates to them by:
* writing, talking, drawing
* singing, acting, dancing
* carrying a card with them as a reminder of who they truly are.

You can purchase the cards and also the CD here and I firmly believe that all parents and teachers of children ages 6-12 should have these cards to review with the children in their lives.

Thanks to Family Review Network for the opportunity to review these amazing cards.
