Mamapedia: The Wisdom of Moms

THE REVIEW:

I know that as a first-time mom, I am always looking to more experienced mom with all the random questions that I come up with on a day to day basis. I post on a bunch of different parenting forums and the information that I have gotten from these women has been invaluable. That is why I was so excited to hear about Mamapedia.

Have you heard of Mamapedia?

It is a virtual encyclopedia of Mothers' wisdom. Mamapedia allows you to quickly navigate through thousands of diverse categories to find the thoughtful, sympathetic-and most importantly-helpful answers to all of your questions. Mamapedia brings millions of women together online, both nation-wide and in our own communities, so we can help each other tackle those difficult parenting questions or even just give recommendations on our favorite pediatricians, playgroups, and kid-friendly restaurants.

Mamapedia enables you to search answers for your most pressing questions, such as childhood crushes, renting a house, and summer camps, to get empathetic and insightful answers from moms around the country.

I think this is going to be a resource that all moms (and dads) are going to find really really useful.

Hell Yes!: Two Little Words for a Simpler, Happier Life by Elizabeth Cogswell Baskin Book Review

THE REVIEW:

When given the chance to review the book Hell Yes!: Two Little Words for a Simpler, Happier Life by Elizabeth Cogswell Baskin I jumped at the opportunity. Anything that could make my life simpler was something that I definitely needed to read. I mean, I am always on the go and always doing. My job, family, mom in the hospital, blogs, etc. It is on going.

So I sat down to read the book and take notes to use in my life. The idea is that we all do too much. We take on all sorts of extra projects and activities and try to crap too much into our schedule and life. All of the items individually are not that much but when you look at them all together, well, it can just be too much!

The author speaks especially to parents, who have have to place their children's needs so high on the priority list that it is easy for their own needs to get lost. Sound familiar?

The basic premise of Hell Yes!, is that when something comes up that you will need to commit yourself to, ask if it's a “Hell Yes.” If it is, do it! If it's not, it's a “Hell No!” This one simple question cuts to the heart of the matter, allowing you to focus on what's most important to you and your family, and compels you to say no to things that fall in the gray area, where you aren't excited about them, but they aren't heinous to you either.

Simple, right? Honestly as I was reading the book, I honestly felt like she was writing to me. I am ALWAYS agreeing to do thing because- I should or only I can do it or it is the nice thing to do or if I don't do it, someone else will. So I am going to try to start weighing things that come up to see if they are a "Hell Yes" or a "Hell No". Because if they are a "Hell No", I am not even going to worry about it (or at least I will try my best).

I strongly recommend this book to any parent who feels overwhelmed (isn't that all of us?) It is really amazing!

About the author:
Most days, Elizabeth is the CEO and creative director of Tribe, Inc., a marketing company working with
world-class brands like UPS, Coca-Cola Enterprises, Chick-fil-A and Porsche. But sometimes she writes
books instead.

Her other books include “How to Run Your Business Like a Girl: Successful Strategies from Entrepreneurial Women Who Made It Happen,” which was an Amazon Top 1,000 Bestseller, and “Beach Wisdom: Life Lessons from the Ocean.”

Dudley's Solo by Tiffany Alexander Book Review

THE REVIEW:

This a very sweet children's book. It is the first book in the "Children's Band" series. It takes place at church where the children are practicing for the choir concert. Dudley is upset that he is not able to sing in the band because he is hearing impaired. His friends come up with a way for him to be able to have a solo anyway.

Sara and I read it together but I think she is a little young to understand all of it, but I can't wait until she does. I think it is a great book that teaches how it is important to embrace our differences, be thankful for our talents and how important it is to help others.

About the author:
Tiffany Alexander resides in Atlanta, GA and works as an editor for CNN. She is a member of the Independent Books Publishers Association, the National Association of Black Journalists, Hampton University Alumni Association and the African- American Children's Book Writers and Illastrators. She is currently working on the next book in the "Children's Band" Series.

Purex Complete 3-in-1 Review

THE REVIEW:

I have recently been selected to be a Purex Insider. As a Purex Insider I get to be on the forefront of an innovative, all-in-one laundry solution. Purex Complete 3-in-1 laundry sheets combine the most effective ingredients from leading detergents, softeners and anti-static sheets into a super-concentrated sheet that goes from washer to dryer for the most streamlined laundry experience ever.

Honestly, when I first got the sample, I was a little skeptical, I mean really- it is supposed to be detergent, softener and anti-static all in one. A little crazy I say. But I figured it was worth it to try it out at least on my load of towels, because if it did not work, at least I was not messing up clothes. But it worked, and it worked really well. And I have to say that I LOVE them now that I am using them. It was really nice to throw a sheet in the wash and then not need to worry about adding anything else to the wash or the dryer. I am a huge huge fan!

FROM THE COMPANY:
Purex® Complete 3-in-1™ laundry sheets are thin, lightweight and sturdy, and formulated with the perfect amount of detergent, softening and anti-static ingredients for a single load of wash. Simply toss a laundry sheet into your washing machine along with each load, and the blue detergent portion releases during the wash cycle. When the wash cycle is complete, simply transfer the laundry sheet to the dryer along with the wash load. The heat of the dryer activates the softening and anti-static ingredients, leaving laundry clean, soft and freshly scented. It’s that simple. The days of waiting for the rinse cycle are now over.

3M Filtrete Clean Air Tips and Blog Tour

I have allergies and asthma. So I always need to make sure that I have a clean filter so the air in my house is easier to breathe. We actually do use Filtrete filters in our home.

Most of us are aware that outdoor air pollution, such as vehicle exhaust, ozone, dirt, soot and smoke, can be dangerous. However, indoor levels of some pollutants may be two to five times higher than outdoor levels. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has identified indoor air pollution as one of the top five urgent environmental risks to public health .

“Many people don’t realize that their home can be a breeding ground for allergens, such as pollen, dust mite debris, mold spores and other particles that may be airborne. Other things in the air, such as chemicals from everyday household items such as furniture, carpeting, paints and cleaning products, can also contribute to poor indoor air quality. For people who are sensitive to these types of things, irritation of the eyes, nose and throat, headaches, dizziness and fatigue may result,” said Dr. Neil Schachter, M.D., past president of the American Lung Association of the City of New York and author of Life and Breath. “A ‘home health check-up’ combined with some simple changes can help make your home a healthier place to live.

Follow these tips from Dr. Neil Schachter to give your home a healthier boost:

1. Avoid cleaning products with ammonia and chlorine – Ammonia and chlorine are volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which can irritate the respiratory tract in people who are sensitive to these chemicals. They can cause watery eyes and sore throats and even can trigger coughing and shortness of breath. Choose milder yet effective cleaning aids like those that use baking soda, vinegar, hydrogen peroxide and citrus oils.

2. Houseplants...a clean air ally – Common indoor houseplants, such as bamboo plants, English ivy and peace lily, can provide a natural way to help fight against rising levels of indoor air pollution by absorbing some potentially harmful gases. A six-inch potted green plant can clean a room of excess carbon dioxide in eight hours .

3. Lay area rugs instead of wall-to-wall carpeting – Wall-to-wall carpeting can attract and hold indoor dirt, pollen, pet hair and mold spores and many contain chemicals. Vacuuming can remove some surface dirt, but often, the vacuum can actually push pollutants deeper into carpet fibers. Area rugs are best since they can be picked up and cleaned thoroughly.

4. Use high performance air filters – Use a high performance filter, like the Filtrete 1” Advanced Allergen Filter from 3M, to help capture particles such as pollen, smoke, dust mite debris and pet dander from the air that passes through the filter. Be sure to change your filter at the start of every season. Test your knowledge of indoor air quality facts and blow away some fictions by playing Clean Air Fact or Fiction at www.filtrete.com/factorfiction.

5. Restrict your furry friends – People who are allergic to cats and dogs are actually allergic to the dander that pets shed. To help minimize exposure to pet dander, keep pets out of the bedroom and especially off the bed.

6. Turn up the air conditioning – Air conditioners not only cool the air in your home, they can also help reduce humidity levels. During the warm months of the year, turn up the air conditioner to help keep humidity levels lower, which can help keep mold from growing.

7. Turn off the humidifier – Room air humidifiers are moisture-generating sources that can spread bacteria, mold spores and chemical deposits into the air in your home. Keep relative humidity between 30% and 50% to help prevent mold growth.

8. Leave shoes outside – Avoid bringing contaminated outdoor pollutants indoors by removing your shoes before entering the home. Wearing shoes indoors can track particles that can become airborne, including animal dander, mold spores, pollen and bacteria.

Rita's Ice Review and Giveaway

THE REVIEW:

On Friday, Sara and I went out with some of our friends and went to an open gym time and then went to Rita's Ice for dessert afterwards. Talk about a good time. It was Sara and I and two of her friends who are her age (2 years old) and their moms (who I am friends with). It was just so fun.

There is something about Rita's that just screams summer to me. So for us to be there with our friends and everyone eating their own icy dessert, for me was the kick-off to summer. I am not sure if it was more fun to eat my dessert or to watch Sara and her friends eating theirs.

And then off course there was the dessert itself. I got a gelati which is a mixture of custard and ice. Chocolate and vanilla custard and root beer ice. It was so amazingly delicious! The custard is wonderful and creamy and the ice was so tasty and together it was just awesome!!!!!!!!!!!

The Side-Yard Superhero (Life in Degraff: An Automythography) by Rick Neice Book Review

THE REVIEW:

There are some times that I have found that I do a review and I find that it is exactly what I needed. I know that I have mentioned it before. Well this book was exactly what I needed. I have a lot going on right now- my mom is still in the hospital, lots of other things are up in the air. And I got this book and finally sat down to read it and...wow. It was just what I needed. It had laugh out loud humor as well as some moments that brought a tear to my eye.

It is the automythography of Rick Neice. Neice says that an automythography is a work of nonfiction that looks reflectively at what we think we remember and how we think we remember it; an iridescent memory based upon truth and fact. That is what this is. This book is the story of Rickie (Neice) and growing up in the small town of Degraff. There are many stories that are told in the book but they all revolve around Rickie and his friend Bernie and their special friendship.

About the author:
When he was four, Rick Niece's family moved to DeGraff, Ohio, a town of 900 citizens. Life in DeGraff was good, and the lessons learned from treasured friendships still inspire him today. As president of the University of the Ozarks in Clarksville, Arkansas, Dr. Niece and his wife, Sherée, are the proud parents of 675 students.

Check out Rick Neice's website and find out where to buy this book. I promise you won't regret it! This book is actually part of a trilogy and I can not wait to get the rest of the books!

Thanks to Family Review Network for the chance to review this wonderful book.

American Heart Association Review

THE REVIEW:

Did you know that the first week in June is National CPR and AED Awareness Week? I recently found out when I was given the chance to be part of the American Heart Association blog tour. Mom Central has joined with the American Heart Association to raise awareness for all to get trained in this life-saving skill. It is critically important for parents to get trained in CPR so we can protect our families. By learning CPR we all make a small commitment that could save the life of someone we love.

I've found that the American Heart Association offers several options for learning CPR. In addition to traditional classroom courses, they offer a self-directed course, CPR Anytime. In just 22 minutes, you can learn CPR. The kit comes with an inflatable, reusable mannequin and instructional DVD. You can choose from an infant kit (for children under one year old) or child/adult kit. If you had prior CPR training but your skills have gotten rusty, now is your chance to brush up. The more you practice, the more automatic the skill will become. By starting a CPR program now, Moms get one step ahead of the game. When faced with an emergency, you will feel confident and know exactly what to do.

I was given the opportunity to review this kit and it is really great. I have CPR training and it was a wonderful refresher course. I think that one of the most important things that you can do it to be trained in CPR. Please head to the American Heart Association website and sign-up for a CPR course and training.

Children's Claritin Review

THE REVIEW:

I am a BzzAgent and was recently given the opportunity to review Children's Claritin Allergy Non-Drowsy 24 Hour Relief Grape Flavored Chewables. It is the number 1 pediatrician recommended non-drowsy brand. And it is safe and effective for kids 2 and up. So we were able to give some to Sara last week when she was having itchy eyes and a runny nose. My allergies were totally acting up and we figured it might be the same thing for her. The weather here has been all over the place, so it is hard to know when she is sick and when it is allergy/weather related. She loved the Claritin Chewables. She actually thought they were candy and got mad when we did not want to give her more. So they get a thumbs up from us!

Allergy Myths and Facts:
* Shorthaired "hypoallergenic" pets can cause allergies — it's a protein in the animal's saliva or urine that people are allergic to, not the hair
* Hay fever is not, in fact, caused by hay — the term was coined in 1828 by a British physician when he noticed his allergy symptoms worsened during the British hay season
* You probably won't pass on all of your allergies to your kids — a child's chances of developing allergies are about 50% if one parent has them, and 75% if both parents have allergies

There's more than one great way to help relieve a child's worst allergy symptoms:

* Children's Claritin® Grape Chewables (for kids age 2 and up) —provides powerful non-drowsy relief of your kid's worst allergy symptoms in a great-tasting chewable
* Children's Claritin® Grape Flavored Syrup (for kids age 2 and up) — provides powerful all day relief without drowsiness in a great tasting, dye-free syrup
* Claritin® RediTabs® tablets (for kids age 6 and up) — instantly dissolving tablet your child can take anywhere, with or without water*

Evenflo Comfort Select Performance Review and Giveaway

THE REVIEW:

I am so excited to be doing this review. Breast-feeding is a topic that is really important to me, so I was so very excited and honored to be given the opportunity to review the New Comfort Select Performance Dual Auto-Cycling Breast Pump from Evenflo.

Sara and I did not have an easy time with breast-feeding in the beginning. We finally started to get into a rhythm and then when Sara was 12 weeks old, I had to go to work. And I started pumping. And it is hard. I was lucky enough that I had a dual electric pump and it was still really hard. I can not imagine having to use a single electric pump or even worse a manual pump.

But we were able to fight through it and I honestly believe it was because I had a good pump. I ended up pumping until Sara was a year old. And Sara is still nursing.

I gave the new Breast Pump a try and it is really great. Will I say that I enjoyed pumping? No, that would be a lie. Will I say that it was not too bad? Yes, it was not too bad. Would I recommend it for other moms who need to pump? Absolutely 100%. In addition to being easy to use, it is also super affordable.

Information about the New Comfort Select Performance Dual Auto-Cycling Breast Pump:
Improved cycle time from 38 to 57cpm (60cpm is the accepted norm for a suckling baby)

Vacuum performance is consistently near the maximum of 250mmHG. Productive vacuum at all settings between min and max.

Regulated power adapter provides more consistent vacuum levels and cycle rate throughout range

Dual performance – 2 individual pumps for better production allowing individual settings and overall increased vacuum capacity

More stable bottle stand to prevent possible spillage

All components are BPA free and contain less than 0.01% phthalates

ISO Compliance and International symbols on pump allow retail in Canada

Upgraded corporate packaging that is WHO code compliant and more appealing to Mom

Now to the best part, one lucky reader is going to win a free breast pump, and nursing pads! How spectacular is that!

THE GIVEAWAY:
